Cutting the Class

Filed under: society — admin @ 6:58 am

Miss Green was going to give a lecture on Monday afternoon. Yet on Sunday night she was told that she had to go to an important meeting the next day at exactly the same time. “No one can be in two places at once. What shall I do?”she thought. But soon, she had an idea.

At five to three on Monday afternoon Miss Green went along to the lecture room. There were about twenty students waiting there for her.“I’m sorry,”she told them, “I won’t be able to give my lecture today.”The students looked surprised. Miss Green explained that she had an important meeting. “However,”she went on, “although I can’t be with you myself, my voice can!”Then she put a small tape recorder on the desk. “You see, I’ve recorded my lecture and you can listen to it without me.”Thinking that she had settled the matter, Miss Green turned on the recorder and left. The meeting finished a little early. Miss Green decided to go back to her students. She stood for a moment outside the lecture room, listening to her own voice. Then very quietly, she opened the door. To her surprise, the room was empty. As she looked around, she saw a number of recorders—-all“listening”to her lecture.

“Well,”she thought,“if I can be in two places at the same time, why can’t they?”

The First Date

Filed under: society — admin @ 6:49 am

Now he is combing his hair and being dressed in his best suit. It seems as if he was ready for a date. Actually that' s what he keeps considering these days. About a week ago, one of his friends taught him how to chat and make friends through the Internet. And that was really important for him who can hardly get a date in the real world. So now as his first blind date approaches, his mind is full of imagination. Very excited and a little afraid, he begins the trip to the agreed place.
What his net girlfriend is called sounds romantic  Red Rose. And he thinks the girl has plenty of experience and abundant knowledge. He has tried lots of methods and finally won her heart.  Now it's time for a date.  He even boasted to his friends how lucky he was. Taking his coming wonderful romance for granted, he smiles at times on the trip.
Soon he gets to the destination, a lovely park.  He can see someone holding a rose waiting there, and the rose is their password. He can't wait to rush to her, but as he comes near, he can tell that is in fact an old lady. Oh, how can such an old lady be my Red Rose! He complains to himself. But there's nobody else nearby. And at that very moment, the lady finds him standing there still and probably in a daze. He feels cold and wants to get away from the embarrassing situation.  ”Hi, do you have a date here?” The lady greets him. “Oh, sorry, I just went the wrong way.  I have a date somewhere else…” his legs trembling, his hands holding his rose at the back. “Oh, I see…”The lady turns away and he quickly grasps the chance to slip a
Back to his study, he turns on his computer and changes his motto as follows: “I will never believe the virtual romance any more!!!” And what he does next is to put Red Rose into his blacklist.
With a long sigh, he sits down, tired and hopeless. Although it's sunny outside, he feels his life in an endless darkness.

Reading Selectively or Extensive

Filed under: society — admin @ 7:13 am

How should we read? Should we read selectively or extensively? Everyone has his own view.

Some people think we should read selectively. They argue that with the development of modern science and technology, more and more books are published every day. It is impossible for us to read all the books. What’s more, there are many bad books that are poisonous to our mind, and we shouldn’t read them. Since we can’t read all the books, and we shouldn’t read bad books, we must read selectively. But others many not agree. They emphasize that today’s society is not what it used to be. If you want to be successful, you must read widely and learn knowledge in both natural sciences and humanities. If a man knows much in one field but knows nothing in others, he may be useless. Since we must have many kinds of knowledge, we must read extensively.

Who’s right? There is a lot to be said for both sides of the argument. However, I think we should read extensively first and then learn deeply about the subject we are interested in.

Why I Chose to Attend College

Filed under: society — admin @ 7:12 am

As my high school years were drawing to a close, I turned over and over again in my mind the question of whether I should go to college. At times I did have some doubts. After careful consideration, however, I finally decided it was worthwhile to attend college.Firstly, because I was always hungry for knowledge and keen on learning. While in high school, I became more and more interested in such subjects as math, physics, and chemistry. I longed to explore much further into those areas.

Secondly, because I knew a college education would provide me with opportunities for all-round development. I would play in musical groups, take part in sports, and join campus organizations. Involvement in various kinds of activities could help make me a well-rounded person. Finally, I was aware that in today’s world many professions require years of specialized trainning. Without a college education, it would be difficult for me to obtain a desirable position.

Now I’m here at college and I seem to have more reasons to congratulate myself on my right decision.

Academic Degrees and Human Skills

Filed under: society — admin @ 7:11 am

Students compete to get into the best universities in the belief that the degrees will give them a slight advantage in the job market when they graduate. A degree is regarded as proof that someone has a good education. Therefore, some people regard diploma as a passport to an ideal job.

But a degree cannot be regarded as the only proof that someone has all the necessary skills. People with good human skills can manage relationships and are prepared to take responsibility. When students start university, academic degrees look certain to success. By contrast, degrees can appear much less useful, if graduates lack in human skills.Clearly, people with high academic degrees and good human skills will have a passport to an ideal job. People’s performance shapes their benefits. Remember, it takes students years to pursue academic degrees, while it takes graduates lifetime to acquire human skills.

Friends(2)

Filed under: society — admin @ 7:09 am

Nowadays, it seems that there are many ways of expressing friendship. Our lives are generally better. People now have more time to consider and be more concerned about their lives. Money, which is considered by many to be of prime importance, makes it difficult to find true friendship. Is friendship only greeting each other on meeting? Is friendship only drinking and eating together? Is friendship only lending money to each other? No, a friend Should be a person you trust and understand. A friend should be a person who tastes happiness and bitterness with you. A friend should be a person who can give you confidence and encouragement.

Though everything has changed, and friendship has scores of definitions, I still believe, and I will believe forever that “A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed”.

Friends(1)

We all know a story similar to this: Two Men and a Bear. In the forest, when a bear attacked them, the thinner man quickly climbed up to the top of a tree and forgot his promise to the fatter guy, who could not climb the tree, about helping each other when in danger. Luckily, the fatter man saved himself. The fatter mat was very disappointed, and when they got together again, he said to the thinner man, “You are not my real friend. Only a friend in need is a friend indeed”. This is a very familiar story. It illustrates to us what a friend should be like. It is, however, just a story.

I would like to tell you something about myself, my true feel-ings. When I was in Senior One, I had great difficulty in learning science subjects. I was unable to understand the teacher and 1 could not do the exercises or the homework. I believed that I was stupid and could not learn anything. The sky was gray and the grass was yellow those days. Everything was a mess in my brain. My classmate, a good student, whom I only considered as one of the classmates before, came to me with a smile. She told me that if I needed help, she would like to help me. As she was also very busy with her studies,I asked myself, “Could she help me? “Sev-eral days later, I knew the answer. Yes, she could. She did as much as she could. She made time every day to help me solve the problems and showed me many good ways to study science. Her patience and earnest nature touched me deeply. I worked very hard and my progress was reflected in my examination result. I appreciated her help very much and wanted to thank her. When I looked at her, once again she smiled at me with an encouraging and congratulatory look. At that moment I understood that a true friend should be like this.

Interracial marriages

Filed under: society — admin @ 7:07 am

Interracial marriages can cause many problems within the family. Due to the fact that the couple has a different family background, culture, and custom, and social class level, many disagreements can occur. Religion can be a problem. If the two has a different religion then the other one, there is a problem. Because some religions celebrate certain holidays while others don’t. In Christianity, for example, Christians celebrate Christmas while Buddudists don’t. Eating habits can also be a problem. One might eat certain food the other don’t or dislike. After all, their offspring will encounter problems too. Childrens who are mixed are not likely to be accepted in certain areas in a community. They often have a hard time fitting in. Interracial marriage is not a good idea, but it is still alright to marry someone who is different than you.

Euthanasia

Filed under: society — admin @ 7:02 am

Euthanasia is one of society’s most widely and hotly debated moral issues. It
has pained and exhausted the courts for entirely too long, questioning the
ethics and morality of the issue. It is a never-ending loop that by no means
considers our right, or the victim’s right, to freedom.

I believe that euthanasia is only debated and kept on the political agenda to
keep the courts busy, thereby ensuring the security of political pocket books.
The vast majority of the population is in favor of euthanasia. However, their
elected candidates don’t represent their views. Thus eliminating
their power of democracy and right to freedom.
